Act II, Scene 1 from La Traviata .............................................................................................................. Verdi Arturo Chacón-Cruz, Alfredo Germont • Ashley Dixon, Annina • Ana María Martínez, Violetta Valéry Christopher Jackson, Giuseppe • Plácido Domingo, Giorgio Germont • Bojan Kneževic, Messenger Alfredo rejoices that he has persuaded Violetta to abandon her glittering life as a courtesan and live quietly with him in the country but becomes distraught to learn that she has been selling her belongings to ?nance their life together. Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, visits Violetta and asks her to renounce Alfredo, since the scandal of their love a?air threatens the engagement of Alfredo’s younger sister. At ?rst deeply reluctant, she ultimately agrees for the sake of the innocent young girl. She pretends to be leaving the house for a short time while Alfredo talks with his father, but then sends him a note bidding him farewell forever. Giorgio tries to persuade his grieving son to return to his family.

Act II, Scene 2, 3, and 4 from Simon Boccanegra ........................................................................................... Verdi Arturo Chacón-Cruz, Gabriele Adorno • Ana María Martínez, Amelia Grimaldi • Plácido Domingo, Simon Boccanegra Gabriele Adorno, under arrest for plotting against Simon Boccanegra, the Doge of Genoa, voices his hatred for his bitter enemy, suspecting that the Doge is his rival for the love of Amelia. She tries in vain to convince Gabriele that her love for him is pure—without revealing the secret that she is indeed Boccanegra’s daughter. Amelia then pleads with her father to be allowed to marry Gabriele. The Doge reluctantly agrees provided Gabriele ceases conspiring against him. Alone, the Doge drinks water that has been poisoned by another of his enemies, then falls asleep. Gabriele emerges from hiding and is bent on killing the Doge, but Amelia intervenes. Astounded to learn at last that Boccanegra is Amelia’s father, Gabriele begs forgiveness, while Amelia pleads on his behalf, and the Doge longs for an end to strife.
